How to Build a Custom Closet

Supplies and Tools

  • MDF sheet split into 14″ strips. My cubbies are 14 inches deep, but you may use whatever measurement works best for you dependent on the size of your closet. If you don’t want to rip your MDF down to the necessary width, another alternative is to use 12″ MDF shelf boards.
  • 1′′x2′′ pine planks. The side shelf supports are made from 1′′x2′′ pine planks (two 14” pieces for each shelf).
  • 1′′x2′′ poplar or pine planks. To make a nice thick front for each shelf, use 1′′x2′′ poplar or pine planks (amount depends on the size of your closet and shelves)
  • Spackling and caulk. For fixing any small gaps and nail holes for a smooth finish.
  • For cutting your wood boards to the proper lengths, use a miter saw or a circular saw.
  • Hammer and nail. This can also be made using a hammer and nails, but it will take much longer. This is the nail gun I have, and it is quite simple to operate.
  • Stud finder. It is by far the greatest and most user-friendly stud finder I’ve ever used.
  • Level.
  • Measuring tape.

Step 1: Cut Down Sheets of Plywood

Cut your 4×8 plywood sheets to the width of your shelves.

Step 2: Drilling Pocket Holes

Drill a pocket hole in the center of each shelf. 2-4 pocket holes will suffice.

Step 3: Sanding

I would suggest sanding everything once you have cut everything down and drilled your pocket holes. Sanding after everything has been cut and flat will save you time and make your life simpler. You may sand by hand, but to save time, I recommend using an orbital sander.

Step 4: Paint Your Closet Shelves

Repaint the closet shelves. I’d recommend putting everything flat, painting one side, letting everything dry overnight, and then painting the opposite side. After both sides have been painted, go to step 5.

Step 5: Glue Your Shelves

Glue and screw your shelves to the supports’ sides. To keep everything in place, you’ll need to use your 24 in the clamp. Let everything remain overnight to allow the adhesive to dry. When everything is dry, start sanding the edges. If you like, you may cover the borders with edge banding.

Step 6: Install the Shelves

It is simple to put up your shelves. All you have to do is figure out where you want to put the unit in your closet and attach it to the walls.

Step 7: Add the Hardware to Hang Your Clothes

Once your shelves are in place, all that remains is to add the hardware to hang your clothes. You’ll need a tape measure, a level, and a pencil to complete this.

Tips in Making a Custom Closet

Custom designers set up showrooms to demonstrate to clients the different ways they may build and personalize their closets for better use. These designs are intended to assist customers in visualizing the different possibilities accessible to them. There are several styles created for various events and reasons, and it is critical that you choose the design that most appeals to you.

A custom built closet isn’t about increasing your resale value, it’s about having a place that is ideally suited to your requirements. When it comes to custom closets, we want to make sure you have a tailored closet design that matches your demands for the intended space. The difference between a poorly planned closet and a wonderfully built closet isn’t in the expense; it’s in how practical space is once it’s finished. While a decent closet is viewed as an extra benefit in the resale market, why not design a space that you will truly enjoy?

Consider Your Space

Is your present closet spacious enough for your requirements if you’re just starting with renovations? If not, is the neighboring room big enough to give up some space to extend your closet for storage? The advantage of a custom closet design is that if space is properly planned, you will no longer require the huge dresser in the next room, freeing up the same amount, if not more, of the space you might add to your closet. When redesigning your house to meet your needs, reallocating space allows for more effective use of dead space. Make a plan.

Get Your Current Closet Organized

Before you begin the design process, you should conduct a full inventory of your closet to obtain an exact picture of the sort of closet organizers you want to integrate into your new area. The easiest approach to guarantee you’re building a closet that meets your needs is to put like items together, donate stuff you don’t wear anymore, and tidy your present area.

Once you’ve determined what you have, develop a list of the storage options that will best meet your needs. Do you have a large collection of shoes and handbags? Do you have a greater number of short things than long things? What additional items, such as belts, dresses, socks, and other stuff, do you have?

Sharing a Closet

Creating a shared closet for both of them entails more than you have ever thought of. Female shirts are shorter than men’s shirts, so rods should be hung correctly to accommodate the size.

While one partner may like to hang their pants with a fold to minimize wrinkles, the other may want to hang them straight to avoid creases. Men generally have ties, belts, watches, and other random goods, but ladies generally need room for handbags, jewelry, and shoes. Each of these objects needs its sort of storage space.

Your closet does not have to be shared 50/50. Instead, try designing a closet that meets the requirements of all parties. Giving the women a bit more room often involves optimizing the area with organizers made to meet their needs. You will have a much better understanding of how much room each individual will require in the new closet design because you will have already taken inventory of your stuff and the sort of space you will require.

Ergonomics Matter

No one likes to go out of their way to find a piece of apparel that they wear regularly. If open shelves are essential to you, you should put them around waist height so you can readily see what you have. Underneath, door and drawer fronts may be installed for additional storage.

Socks, underwear, and other accessories should be kept in higher drawers because they are frequently used. Items that are infrequently worn can be placed in lower-height drawers because they are accessed less frequently. By building a custom closet for your requirements, include things made particularly for your stuff, and you will never have to rearrange again. Because they won’t have somewhere else to go, your clothing, jewelry, and accessories will already be where they belong.

Limit Your Closet Drawers

While we understand that everyone needs drawers for goods such as jewelry, underwear, and socks, other things such as sweaters and t-shirts are better suited to shelves. When you build your closet in this manner, you gain two significant advantages. Drawers take up more room than shelves, and shelves allow you to see your stuff more easily.

Take Those Shoes off the Floor

Shoes are best placed at mid-height rather than on the floor under dresses and trouser hems.

Luxury Closet Additions

There’s no need to worry about water escaping from your sunken bath since the custom sliding shower doors completely surround the tub in a clean, no-nonsense fashion. Sliding glass panels tailored to your area are also a fantastic alternative where space is limited since the shower doors do not require a hinge or swing outward, consuming valuable floor space and making fixtures and fittings hard to operate.

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial aspect of closet design. A gloomy closet makes it difficult to discover what you need quickly. Discover the finest option for lighting your closet. However, you should only consider closet lighting after you’ve decided on a design for your shelves. When it comes to closet lighting, LED lights or lights that do not create heat are the best options.

Final Thoughts

You discovered what materials and tools were required to construct a custom closet. You have the option of building this project using either budget or premium tools. Okay, you’re finished; you’ve created your very own personalized closet. Take some time to absorb all you’ve learned, and then snap a photo and post it on your favorite social network.
